Herniated disc
A bulging disc is common as we age. 70% of 70 year olds have a bulging disc and live without pain (Cady D.O. 2019).
A bulging or herniated disc becomes a problem when it pushes out the back of a vertebra and reaches the spinal cord or a nerve root.
Up to 90% of lumbar disc herniations can be managed with a conservative approach, without surgery.

What We Look For
We look at how you move, which positions centralise the pain, and how much load the disc is being asked to carry.
We talk through the lifestyle factors that keep the area sensitive, because those move the needle as much as the room does.

How We Help
- Pain
- Settling the nerve pain that runs out from the disc.
- Movement
- Finding the positions and movements that help rather than flare.
- Strength
- Loading the area back up so it tolerates your day.
- Surgery
- Most disc herniations can be managed without it.
Our Approach
1
Corrective exercises
The movements that centralise the pain, started early and progressed as you tolerate them.
2
Assessment of lifestyle factors
Sleep, load, stress and the demands of your week, all of which change how sensitive the area is.
3
Cold therapies
Used alongside the plan to settle an acute flare so you can keep moving.
How the plan usually runs
The first three to four visits are about reducing the pain and getting you moving again. From there we slowly move into strengthening, with the plan worked backwards from what you want to get back to.
